We are pleased to invite applications for the upcoming BIE Japan Workshop 2026 in Kyoto, designed to train scientists, medical practitioners, and aspiring entrepreneurs in design thinking, creative problem-solving, product development, and commercialization strategies for addressing unmet medical needs.

 

BIE Japan is a unique, practice-oriented program in the biomedical sciences, designed to strengthen creativity, innovation, and practical competence in translational research.

 

This immersive program combines lectures, group work, and team presentations to enhance creativity, innovation, and translational research skills in the biomedical sciences.

Participants: Scientists, Postdocs, and PhD candidates affiliated with KSAC (Kansai Startup Academia Coalition) member universities who have business ideas derived from their scientific research.

Note:

  • Exceptions can be considered on a case-by-case basis—please contact us if in doubt.
  • To ensure broad participation, the number of participants from each institution may be limited.
  • Medical advisors will join your discussions to provide clinical insights and clarify unmet medical needs.
  • Selected interns from business or management schools will join to support group discussions.

 

This course is run thanks to: Professor Michael Wallach and Dr. Isabella Hajduk from Centre for Innovative Medical Research (CIMR), Sydney, Australia as a founder of the BIE course. Dr. Fumiaki Ikeno from Stanford University, Prof. Will Baber from the Graduate School of Management, Kyoto University and Prof. Tomoyoshi Koyanagi from Kyoto University Hospital as advisors of the course.

Additional advisors from leading international biotech ecosystems may be invited to join selected sessions as guest speakers.
